Medical Overview

image According to the ADA the USA has over 20 million sufferers, over 60% of which suffer from a burning sensation in their feet is growing. Traditionally diabetics have a problem with their feet and in some cases it is painful just to walk. The unique benefits found in the Footfridge innersole have been found to considerably reduce this discomfort and increase their quality of life. At this point it is prudent to go into a little more detail about diabetes and the effect it has on the feet.

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life.

The cause of diabetes is not known although genetic and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise appear to play key roles. There are 3 types of diabetes:

  • Type 1 Diabetes - Results from the body’s failure to produce insulin. It is estimated that 5 to 10% of Americans diagnosed with diabetes are Type 1 sufferers.
  • Type 2 Diabetes - Results from insulin resistance combined with relative insulin deficiency (a condition whereby the body fails to use the insulin properly). Approximately 90 to 95% (14.6 million) of Americans diagnosed with diabetes have Type 2. In addition to Type 2, there is the pre-diabetes phase, a condition that occurs when a person’s blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough for diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes. These people are in addition to the above figures.
  • Gestational Diabetes - This affects about 4% of all pregnant women, about 135,000 cases every year.

  • In most cases foot problems occur such as abnormal pressure points, blood vessel problems and nerve damage. The cost to the health industry is enormous and any product that can alleviate the symptoms will be eagerly accepted. The acute long term complications of the disease include diabetic nephropathy, neuropathy, retinopathy and macro vascular disease. These can lead to hypertension and abnormal blood flow in areas such as the feet (potentially resulting in amputations), giving rise to major additional costs and a burden on the health care system. The Footfridge innersole can potentially reduce this burgeoning public health cost.

At least 171 million people worldwide have diabetes (Year 2000 figure). This figure is predicted to more than double to approximately 366 million by the year 2030. In the USA alone, it is estimated that around 7.0% of the population, or approximately 21 million people, have diabetes. Also, it is estimated that 41 million people have pre-diabetes. A quarter of these people will suffer from chronic neuropathy, although the majority will, to some degree, have foot problems. The benefit that the Footfridge innersoles may offer these sufferers is evidenced in the testimonial section.

It is also interesting to note that the International Diabetes Federation state that 194 million people worldwide have diabetes (Year 2003 figure), yet the American Diabetes Association’s figure in 2002 was approximately 150 million.

Regardless of the numbers, it is widely documented that diabetes is the fastest growing disease in the world today.
